Looking for tea and cake to stock up your energy levels? Fancy a cream tea now you’ve burnt off a few calories? Here are a few tea shops in prime walking locations.

Badgers Tea Rooms & Garden, Alfriston – tea room with attractive walled garden.

Beanstalk Tea Rooms, Firle –  a short walk from Firle Village and located right under the Downs and Firle Beacon, there are many circular routes that bring you to Beanstalk Tea Garden.

Ditchling Tea Rooms – good tea rooms with a small back garden serving cakes and meals.

Duddleswell Tea Rooms

Duddleswell Tea Rooms – during a break from opening, there’s usually seats out on the grass!

Duddleswell Tea Rooms – Ashdown Forest tea rooms with a sunny front garden, near to Pooh Bear country and walks. Stop off before or after looking for Heffalumps.

Hiker’s Rest, East Dean – on the prefect village green, next to the Tiger Inn. Pint or tea?

The Grange Tea Garden, Rottingdean – tea garden at back of fine Georgian House with museum and art gallery (April – Oct). Other good tea rooms available in Rottingdean.

Wildflour Cafe, Saddlescombe Farm near Brighton – tea and local produce served at National Trust owned historic farm near the famous South Downs landmark, Devil’s Dyke.  See Saddlescombe Farm and Newtomber Hill Walks.

Litlington Tea Gardens – tranquil tea gardens in the small hamlet of Litlington, near Alfriston, in the heart of the East Sussex South Downs. Open March – October. Seems to be on a downhill trajectory though – check out  reviews on Trip Adviser.

Little Cottage Tea Rooms, Glynde –  ‘a quintessential tea room experience in the beautiful village of Glynde’ is a fair description even if they do say so themselves, and perfectly located for an ascent of Mount Caburn.

Mrs Burton’s Restaurant and Tea Rooms, Battle – right next door to Battle Abbey at the Heart of ‘1066 country’ in Battle High Street and dating back to the 16th Century.

Piglet’s Tea Rooms, Pooh Corner, Hartfield – Pooh themed shop and tea rooms in Hartfield, perfect for post Pooh Sticks cakes if you fancy a little something.

The Stable Tea Rooms at Heaven Farm – set in 100 acres of beautiful parkland, Heaven Farm is steeped in 600 years of farming history, and includes licensed  tea rooms, the Bluebell nature trail (for a small fee but worth it at Bluebells time), wallabies and rural life museum.

Stanmer Park Tea Rooms – busy tea rooms in Stanmer Village and Park, in the downs outside Brighton, and walks in every direction.

Wishing Well Tea Rooms, Wilmington – despite being just off the A27, these tea rooms are easy to miss and manage to retain a rural tranquility with downland views, and situated close to many excellent walks.

West Sussex

Amberley Village Tea Rooms – the tea room is located in picturesque Amberley and the building itself is a Grade II listed property. The building has been sympathetically restored and has a delightful courtyard garden, and it’s hard to believe it was formerly the village slaughterhouse.

Belinda’s , Arundel – 16th century tea rooms in Arundel.

Highdown Tea Rooms – next to Highdown Gardens and good for a walk up to Highdown Hill. Alternatively, try the pub.

Riverside, Houghton Bridge, Amberley – sit by the river Arun in the South Downs for tea, a nice slice of cake or a baguette, meal or pizza . Perfect for walks around Amberley. Licensed.

The Junction @ Clapham Village Stores & Tea Room – nice setting for the alternative Clapham Junction. Ponder the Clapham Woods Mystery whilst sipping your cuppa. Limited opening hours.

The Steyning Tea Rooms – traditional British tea rooms in the heart of Steyning.

    Wilton granary tearoom is now closed! Hikers rest at sadlescombe under new management and not open every day!
